Sacramento Kings history

The Sacramento Kings are one of the longest-running and most storied franchises in NBA history. Founded in 1923, they’ve been through several name changes, ownership changes, and even a relocation from their original home in Rochester to California’s capital city. Roots in Rochester

The Sacramento Kings started out as the Rochester Seagrams before changing their name to the Royals in 1945. They enjoyed moderate success over the next few decades, winning four division titles and appearing in five NBA Finals between 1948 and 1969 before eventually relocating to Kansas City-Omaha in 1973 after a long struggle with attendance issues.

The Kings remain one of only two teams (the other being the Washington Wizards) that have never won an NBA championship, though they did make it as far as Game 7 of the 1951 Championship series against the New York Knicks before losing 78-75. The Royals also retired two numbers during their years in Rochester—George Kaftan's #11 and Bob Davies' #11—both players who were inducted into Basketball Hall of Fame.

In 1985, the team moved again, this time to California's capital city, where they became known as the Sacramento Kings. Since then, they've experienced some highs (reaching seven consecutive playoff appearances from 1998-2004) and lows (falling short of reaching .500 for 11 straight seasons).
